Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps

The Mission of BCMH is to assure, through the development and support of high quality coordinated systems, the children with special health care needs and their families obtain comprehensive care and services which are family centered community based and culturally sensitive.

The Portsmouth City Health Department provides a Public Health Nurse(PHN) to help identify and refer children with potentially handicapping conditions and to assist families in finding and utilizing needed services. Home visits are made by the PHN to help families coordinate services. The PHN works with other agencies to make sure the child’s needs are met and keeps in touch with families with letters and phone calls. The PHN coordinates and staffs specialty clinics and informs families and care providers about BCMH and the Medical Home Concept. The Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps is a tax-supported program though the Ohio Department of Health.
